A Well-Balanced Snack

We talk about having a “Well-Balanced” Plate… but what does this even mean?

In the context of nutritional speak, we mean that our plate of food is balanced between the appropriate amount of Macronutrients – those being Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fats.

The “appropriate amount” is a very HUGE concept that we will not get into in this specific post… however, I want to get your mind thinking about getting a WELL-BALANCED plate… meaning foods from EACH MACRONUTRIENT CATEGORY.

Take the photo here:

  • Small can of Tuna
  • Piece of Sourdough Bread
  • Avocado

From the Macronutrient Lens, one could look at this meal like this then:

  • Protein
  • Carb
  • Fat

Do you see what we mean?

Instead of simply looking at each individual FOOD, looking at it through the lens of the MACRO it fits under helps us to understand if we are getting a good variety and BALANCE here.

How often do people eat this for a snack when they get home:

  • Cracker
  • cookie or dateball
  • apple

Thus, from a Macronutrient perspective that looks like this:

  • Carb
  • Carb
  • Carb
  • 🙁 🙂

Can you see where we’re going with this?

We will examine this in more detail in further posts.
But for now, look at the COMPOSITION of your meals over the next few days… are they more predominant in one macro over another? How is this corresponding with your mood and energy levels?

Can you think of slight adjustments you can make to achieve more BALANCE (from a Macronutrient perspective)?
