Make Comparisons

When it comes to food choices there are so many products on the market these days. How do you know which one is the best for you?

Take a look at these two yoghurts for example:

From the outside they both look pretty similar, right?

Both say “Greek” yoghurt, both say “Natural” and that they contain protein.

The package is neutral, and “wholesome” looking (yes, this is a “thing” ;))

Let’s have a look at the Nutrition Information now shall we?

Yoghurt on the Left – Kalo Authentic Greek

Yoghurt on the Right – Yoplait Greek Style Yoghurt

What does it all mean?

Now you don’t have to have a degree in nutrition to pick up on a few key points when comparing foods. Let’s look further:

  • Kalo has almost double the protein per serve
  • Yoplait has almost twice the carbs per serve
  • Yoplait has a higher sugar level
  • The fat content in Yoplait is higher (saturated fat is more than doubled) ** Note: fat isn’t BAD… BUT we need to take this into account when we look at our food holistically **
  • Yoplait has 430kJ (103 cals) per serve, Kalo 310kJ (76 cals)
  • Looking at serving sizes is interesting as well – Kalo is 160g (5 per pack), Yoplait is 125g (8 per pack). I can almost GUARANTEE that you will go over your serving size if you eat the Yoplait… which, again, is an interesting factor to keep in mind…

So which brand would we choose?

Looking at all of the data objectively, we would choose to eat the Kalo brand.

If we were to put these two foods on a spectrum, the Kalo yoghurt comes out on top.

Does this make the Yoplait yoghurt “bad”? No, abosolutely not. BUT, when we are looking for little changes in our diet to elevate our nutritional profile – little changes like this can make a big impact!

In summary…

Do your research, spend a little extra time comparing products.

** Important Note: with these two yoghurts notice that one is “Authentic Greek” (Kalo) and the other is “Greek Style” (Yoplait)… very subtle and very easy to miss!**

Be discerning, look a little longer at the product labels.

Know what you’re eating 🙂
