This isn’t going to come off like you think it will…
I’m going to say… ditch the routines and rituals – Shocking! I know 😉
Here’s the thing… people get too locked up in this stuff.
Surely Routines and Rituals are good for me?
Yes and no.
People think they will follow the “perfect” routine (wake up, yoga, coffee, journaling, meditation, etc…) this lasts all of about a week before it loses its steam. Not because you’re lazy or unmotivated (even if this is somewhat true…) You actually give up because we already have SO MANY THINGS controlling us, all the time! It’s just not sustainable.
We have to work, pick up the kids, drive the kids to every event imaginable, make dinner, do the cleaning… I need not go on.
So once we have these fancy routines and rituals dropped in the mix, it just becomes “something else to do”. As horrible as that sounds, it’s the truth. Then, heaven forbid you miss it one day, you get the guilts dropped in there as well for good measure.
I even go as far to say that holiday routines and rituals are binding as well – if the words, “but we always do it this way,” are uttered… I strongly suggest you shake things up a bit! Hey, you just might like the “different way”. And if not, we just chalk that up to learning and now we know what we DON’T like!
Why not try this instead:
Think of every super cool, amazing daily/weekly/monthly rituals or routines and put them all in your Wellness Toolkit. Lock it in there and remember it’s there! (…Make a list if you are a Goldfish type 😉 )
Now, next time you wake up in the morning have a Body Scan, have a THINK and determine what you and your body would best like in that very moment! Then select it out of your Wellness Toolkit and go for it.
There is something psychologically thrilling about this concept.
It means I have FREEDOM. And freedom (of choice) is one thing most, if not all, humans seek. The minute you feel like you “have to” do something – you’re already losing the battle.
